Igor Kurganov Wins 2017 PokerStars Championship Barcelona €50,000 Super High Roller

Igor Kurganov has won the 2017 PokerStars Championship Barcelona €50,000 super high roller, defeating a field of 86 total entries to win his tenth career live tournament title for €1,084,100 ($1,275,071 USD). This was the fourth seven-figure tournament score of his career.

“It’s incredible! I’m so happy!” said Kurganov. “It was relatively simple today. I won the first three, four hands in a row and immediately became the chip leader… I think I was leading all the way except for about 20 minutes.”

This latest massive score brought Kurganov’s lifetime live earnings to just shy of $14 million, enough to see him move into 23rd place on the all-time money list.

As you would expect in a prestigious super high roller event, Kurganov was not the only name from the top of the all-time live earnings leaderboard in contention for the title. In fact, four other players among the top 25 in career tournaments earnings cashed in this event. Isaac Haxton, who is 24th in lifetime earnings with $13,922,351, finished 11th in this event for $122,054. Tenth-place finisher Daniel Colman earned $122,054 in this event, maintaining his third-place spot on the earnings leaderboard with $28,342,753. Daniel Negreanu, who sits atop the money list with $33,113,327, finished 9th for $139,203. Finally, Bryn Kenney finished seventh for $234,410. With $17,520,948 in career earnings, Kenney sits in 16th place on the money list.

Money wasn’t the only prize on the line in this massive event. Players also earned plenty of Card Player Player of Year points. The event ultimately had quite the impact on the POY leaderboard, which is presented in 2017 by the Commerce Hotel & Casino. Bryn Kenney already held the outright lead in the POY race, but with his 15th final table finish he extended his advantage over the field. The 204 points he earned in this event put him 850 points ahead of his nearest competition in Koray Aldemir, who finished third in this event for $625,054 and 544 points. This was the Austrian’s 12th final table finish, and it was enough to see him climb into second place on the overall leaderboard.
