Qian Zhi Qiang Wins 2017 World Poker Tour Sanya Main Event

The World Poker Tour first made an appearance in China with a WPT National event held on the island destination of Sanya back in 2012. The event was a success, and has now been held six times. The most recent WPT Sanya was held as part of the WPT DeepStacks tour. The invitational event’s field was capped at 888 players, and that number was met to build a prize pool of ¥8,880,000 ($1,339,882 USD). In the end it was Chinese local Qian Zhi Qiang who emerged victorious, capturing the title and the ¥1,600,000 ($241,420 USD) first-place prize.

This was Zhi Qiang’s second career live tournament title, having won the $11,000 HKD event at the 2016 Asia Championship of Poker in Macau. The Shanghai native now has $489,491 in lifetime cashes.

Two American WPT main tour champions made the journey to Sanya, which is a beach resort town in South Eastern China. 2017 WPT Borgata Winter Poker Open winner Daniel Weinman and 2017 WPT Bay 101 Shooting Star champion Samuel Panzica were among the hundreds of players who turned out to the MGM Grand Sanya.

When the field had been narrowed to a final table it was Zhi Qiang who held the chip lead. The only female player to make the final table was Tang Ying, who entered the day in third chip position. Also among the last nine was Macau Poker Cup High-Roller champion Li Guang Yu.

Zhi Qiang notched six knockouts at the final table, including the final elimination of the tournament. With a flop of 10Spade Suit5Club Suit2Club Suit Hu Ling Fei made a continuation bet, only to have Zhi Qiang move all-in. Fei made he call with thte 4Spade Suit4Diamond Suit and was in the lead against Zhi Qiang’s KSpade Suit2Diamond Suit. The turbn brought the KHeart Suit to give Zhi Qiang two pair and the advantage in the hand. The 2Heart Suit on the river gave Zhi Qiang a full house and secured him the title. Fei earned $165,976 USDas the runner-up finisher.
