MGM Ups The Ante For Poker In Massachusetts

MGM Resorts told Massachusetts gaming regulators Thursday that its upcoming poker room will be larger than originally planned.

The casino operator, which is in the midst of building the nearly $1 billion MGM Springfield, said that its card room will have 23 tables, up from a previous plan for less than 20. A rival Boston-area casino from Wynn Resorts has planned for 90 tables. The Bay State doesn’t currently have any regulated poker rooms, as players historically have had to travel to casinos in neighboring states to find games.

MGM Springfield will open in fall 2018, while Wynn Boston Harbor will debut in June 2019.

In December, MGM opened a 39-table room at its $1.4 billion MGM National Harbor, one of the region’s largest casinos. That room has ballooned Maryland’s live poker market.

The Massachusetts Gaming Commission said on Twitter that MGM’s move to boost its poker room is designed to “accommodate [an] emerging gaming trend for [a] more interactive/communal experience.” In other words, MGM Springfield will embrace a growing demand for table games over slot machines among the millennial generation.

MGM also said at the meeting with regulators where the poker room will be located.
