Nikunj Jhunjhunwala Wins 2018 WPT DeepStacks India Main Event

Nikunj Jhunjhunwala took down the 2018 World Poker Tour DeepStacks India INR 55,000 ($753USD) no-limit hold’em main event. He outlasted a field of 697 total entries to capture the title and the INR 6,635,000 ($92,176 USD) first-place prize. In addition to the money and the title, Jhunjhunwala also earned 420 Card Player Player of the Year points for the win.

“It’s sinking in now that I’ve taken it down. There was a point in time where the chips were down, and he had a 3-to-1 chip lead on me, and my rail was just in his ears, it was fantastic,” Jhunjhunwala told WPT reporters. “My rail was behind me, egging me on. We have been playing cash games almost every other day together. All thanks to them, they kept me motivated.”

Jhunjhunwala entered the final table in eighth chip position with nine players remaining. he scored his first knockout of the day when he picked up ASpade SuitKHeart Suit and called the all-in move of Amit Jain, who held the AClub Suit10Club Suit. Neither player improved and Jain was eliminated in seventh place ($15,434 USD).

It didn’t take long for Jhunjhunwala to get involved in another big pot. Akshay Nasa moved all-in with the KHeart SuitJClub Suit and Jhunjhunwala called holding the QHeart SuitQDiamond Suit. He ended up making quads by the river to send Nasa to the rail in sixth place ($18,692 USD).

Deepak Singh began the day with the chip lead, but he found himself sliding down the leaderboard as the day wore on. In the end, he ended up getting all-in with pocket jacks. Jhunjhunwala called with the AClub Suit5Club Suit and made the nut flush on a QSpade Suit9Club Suit2Club Suit2Heart SuitKClub Suit to knock Singh out in fourth place ($30,660 USD).

Sahil Mahboobani eliminated Vidur Singhal in third place ($41,677 USD) to take a slight lead into heads-up play with Jhunjhunwala. The two battled back and forth for a while, but by the time the final hand arose Jhunjhunwala had built a massive lead. Mahboobani moved all in for 1.6 million from the small blind holding the KClub Suit8Spade Suit and Jhunjhunwala called with the 9Spade Suit5Spade Suit. The board came down QDiamond Suit10Diamond Suit5Heart Suit9Diamond Suit8Club Suit and Jhunjhunwala made two pair to lock up the pot and eliminate Mahboobani in second place ($64,641 USD).
