Phil Hellmuth Has ‘Disrespect For This Generation’ Of Poker Pros

Poker Hall of Famers Daniel Negreanu and Phil Hellmuth recently finished competing at the 2017 Poker Masters, where both made final tables in the high roller series. However, it was their words off the felt that were arguably the most combative.

The small, elite fields resurrected the age-old question on the poker circuit: Who is the best in the world in no-limit hold’em tournaments? Hellmuth, winner of 14 World Series of Poker bracelets, of course sees himself at the top.

Negreanu is no. 1 on the all-time tournament money list with $33.2 million, while Hellmuth sits at no. 8 with $21.4 million. German phenom Fedor Holz blew by Hellmuth in just a few years time, winning $23.9 million since early 2013. A lot of attention in recent years has been given to a slew of top players that have emerged from Germany.

Negreanu took issue with Hellmuth saying some of his peers in the events weren’t up to his level. “Your disrespect for this generation only hurts your own growth,” Negreanu said at one point on Tuesday. He said Hellmuth should put his money where his mouth is, but so far the “Poker Brat” hasn’t indicated he’s willing to participate in a formal challenge against the game’s best young players.
