WCOOP 2017: First-prize money even flows Jon “PearlJammer” Turner’s way in #13-H ($1,050 PLO8, 6-Max)

Jon Turner has been around for a while, notching numerous online successes on PokerStarsand elsewhere while earning more than $2.65 million in live tournament cashes. His username “PearlJammer” — taken from the Seattle rock band whose chart successes date back more than 25 years — perhaps indicates something about Turner’s relative longevity when compared to others around the tables.

Tonight you can add one more success to Turner’s long list, as he’s won this year’s WCOOP Event #13-H title, a $1,050 pot-limit Omaha hi/lo event in which opponents arrived like butterflies and Turner chased them all away to earn a nice $35,991.08 first prize following a three-handed deal.

There were 208 entries total for this one, building a $208,000 prize pool that easily beat the $150K guarantee. The top 24 finishers made the money, and the bubble did burst before Day 1 concluded on Wednesday. Indeed, just 15 were left to start Day 2, and it didn’t take long for three more to fall and they were down to two tables.

Thiago “KKremate” Crema (12th) next went out, earning $3,876.89, followed by Jerry “Perrymejsen” Ödeen (11th) and sattla (10th) who each took away $5,018.74.

A short-stacked Christopher “Apotheosis92” Kruk next busted in ninth after losing the last of his stack to PearlJammer, adding to Turner’s lead. Kruk added another cash to his collection not long after taking sixth in the PokerStars Championship Barcelona Super High Roller while also winning a side event in Spain.

Before long Turner was up over 3 million — better than twice nearest challenger IamSoSo with 1.5 million. Then it was a Bjorn “bokkie87” Verbakel falling in eighth to russiadgl, like Kruk earning $6,496.88 for the finish.

The last seven players were reseated around an unofficial final table of seven, and it would take more than an hour for another to fall.

Zbad was the unfortunate final-table bubbler after getting all in before the flop with A♣K♠T♣2♥ versus IAmSoSo’s A♠A♥Q♦2♣, then watching the board come 5♦8♠8♥8♦9♦ to give the latter a full house and send Zbad out with seventh-place money of $8,410.37.

Turner still was chip leader to start the final table with just over 3 million, but BlackFortuna had closed the gap.

Seat 1: Jon “PearlJammer” Turner (Mexico) — 3,001,546
Seat 2: russiadgl (Russia) — 505,751
Seat 3: Zanos_Goda (Russia) — 1,750,314
Seat 4: krokotopus (Russia) — 1,094,890
Seat 5: IAmSoSo (Sweden) — 1,432,642
Seat 6: BlackFortuna (Germany) — 2,614,857

After nearly an hour of six-handed play, the shortest stack kroktopus opened from early position, then called after BlackFortuna three-bet from the button. The 8♦J♦A♠ flop then drew an all-in from kroktopus, called by BlackFortuna.

kroktopus had A♦8♥7♥4♦ for aces and eights while BlackFortuna had A♥K♥6♠5♠ for aces only, with both live to make a low hand. The 9♣ turn and 7♠ river didn’t help kroktopus, but made a low and a straight for BlackFortuna, meaning aces and eights were a “dead man’s hand” for kroktopus who took sixth.

A short while later IAmSoSo called Jon “PearlJammer” Turner’s preflop three-bet, then called all in on a J♥4♥3♠ flop holding A♣A♠Q♣T♠ versus Turner’s A♥Q♥9♦3♣. Turner was drawing to a flush, and after the T♦T♥ runout he got there, beating IAmSoSo’s trip tens to knock the latter out in fifth.

Close to a half-hour after that Turner raised the small blind, russiadgl pushed all in from the big, and Turner called showing A♦K♥9♦4♥ while russiadgl had J♣5♣4♣3♦. The board came 6♥Q♥3♠5♥7♠, giving russiadgl a 7-low and a straight but Turner a 6-low and a flush, thereby stopping russiadgl’s run in fourth.

Not too long after that the final three decided to talk about a possible deal, at which point Turner led with just over 4.35 million, Zanos_Goda was next with almost 3.15 million, and BlackFortuna third with just under 2.9 million.

“ICM”-based numbers were proposed — leaving $4,160 for which to play — and BlackFortuna responded by suggesting a need for a little more.

BlackFortuna: hm since Im plo hs player I should get a little more I think
PearlJammer: agree
BlackFortuna: check out my hsdb
PearlJammer: I’m def not giving anything up… was going to ask for more, but finally decided to be nice
BlackFortuna: hmmm
BlackFortuna: ok whatever
BlackFortuna: lets be nice you are right
BlackFortuna: I agree

All three agreed to the payouts as proposed, and play continued.

The deal-making might have been nice, but they continued to battle fiercely thereafter. Finally it was Zanos_Goda four-betting all in preflop with J♠J♥4♣3♠ and Turner calling with A♦Q♣6♠5♣. The board came 3♣9♦2♦K♣A♠, giving Turner a pair of aces and a 6-low while leaving Zanos_Goda only with that pair of jacks with which he started, ending his run in third.

With that pot Turner had a commanding lead to start heads-up play with more than 8.88 million to BlackFortuna’s almost 1.52 million.

After almost 15 minutes Turner still had 8.26 million when he min-raised the button, BlackFortuna three-bet the pot, and PearlJammer called. The flop came 6♠9♥8♦, BlackFortuna led for 840,000. leaving just a little more than that behind, and when Turner raised, BlackFortuna called all in.

BlackFortuna: A♦6♥2♦2♠
PearlJammer: 8♠6♦5♣2♣

The turn was the T♠ and river the Q♦, making no low possible. BlackFortuna finished with a pair of sixes, not as good as Turner’s two pair (eights and sixes), and it was all over — Turner had won.

PearlJammer is more than just still alive, all right.

Congratulations to Jon Turner for topping a tough field in this PLO8 event to earn a handsome almost $36K payday.
