Rutger Hennen Wins WPT Prime Amsterdam Main Event

Rutger Hennen emerged victorious in the World Poker Tour Prime main event, hosted at Holland Casino in the heart of Amsterdam on March 22, claiming a grand prize of $227,472. This triumph marked a significant milestone in the Dutchman’s poker journey, catapulting his total earnings to over $245,000, in what proved to be an arduous battle lasting a staggering 297 hands at the final table.

The tournament, featuring a buy-in of €1,100 for a no-limit hold’em format, accommodated a massive field of 1,340 entries across four starting flights. This generated a formidable prize pool of $1,393,455, ensuring that even the top 168 players secured a minimum payout of $1,930.

Day 2 witnessed the return of all money-making contenders, gradually dwindling the field to a final 12 contenders poised for the ultimate showdown on the last day of play. Notable deep runs were made by players like Sven Stok (12th), Heskey Selva (11th), and Max Deveson (10th), although they ultimately bowed out before the final nine contenders convened to determine the champion.

Starting the final table at the lower end of the chip counts, Hennen embarked on a remarkable ascent towards victory. Despite an initial struggle, he seized pivotal opportunities, gradually amassing chips to become a formidable force. With strategic play and well-timed aggression, Hennen clinched critical knockouts, steadily asserting his dominance.

The final duel pitted Hennen against Maksym Klopotok of Ukraine, with the Dutchman enjoying a commanding chip lead. Despite several valiant attempts by Klopotok to mount a comeback, Hennen maintained his composure, consistently widening the gap.

In the climactic hand, Hennen, holding pocket sevens, called Klopotok’s all-in shove with A-8 offsuit. As the board ran out 10-9-5-6-9, Hennen’s pocket pair held strong, sealing Klopotok’s fate in second place. Klopotok’s commendable performance earned him $151,667, marking his most significant tournament achievement to date.
